David Petersen and the History of Myotonx

David Petersen is the founder and developer of Myotonx NeuroMyofascial Integration.  While he was educated as an exercise physiologist, massage therapist (LMT) and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), he found that he needed a different approach to how he had been tought.  While he managed to get satisfactory results with his clients, he discovered he needed to concentrate on the whole- body FUNCTION of his clients to get results that were astounding and long-lasting.  So was the beginning of the development of Myotonx.

Early in his practice David understood that the human body had structural compensations that had a direct impact on the function of the body.  It was always obvious to him the importance and significance of aligned posture.  He therefore began to study and develop a method that could minimise the compensations and restore structural balance and posture.

David understood that muscle tension not only moved the body but also stabilized and held the structure in alignment.  He started exploring the concepts of Tensegrity and its implication on function and wellness.  He also read extensively and studied the concepts of Osteopathic Medicine since the tenets of this approach closely matched his thoughts where an emphasis was placed on human structure and function.

In his reading and studies he learned that there were observable compensations in the myofascial system that resulted in predictable posture deviations.  David also understood that the myofascial system was under the control of the the brain and the nervous system.  He wondered if there was an ability to adjust the tension in the myofascia by somehow harnessing the nervous to “do the work” of realigning the body’s structure.

In response David started exploring the concepts of origin/insertion work and found there was a close correlation between it and acupressure and Periosteal Trigger points.  Using the knowledge gained from the fascial compensations observed by osteopaths he began to using the bodywork techniques to see if they could adjust the tension in myofascial system.
